
We recently just talked about the GDPR and how it is helping to protect privacy on consumers. BUT 75% of consumers are actually finding it hard to identify companies that are compliant with the standard. and as little as 36% actually feel they can trust companies with their personal data.

In Australia, we have the Privacy Act 1998 to protect privacy. But how the GDPR ain’t doing so great, are we facing the same issue?
79% of us don’t want our data shared with other organisaitons because we feel there is a privacy risk associated with online services. 36% are concerned with data breaches and ID fraud & theft. Although given thes concerns 65% of Australians don’t read privacy policies!
why is it important?
consumer are being more concerned about how and what their data are being used for more than ever. Thanks to the Facebook and Cambridge analytical scandal. YIKES!
Consumers are continue to be confused and majority of them are not taking advantage to protect their own personal data. So it is important for a business to work with an organisation with a good reputation that is trustworthy when engaging in data technology. to gain the trust of consumers to show there is care and respect for their privacy.

When an issue has been identified, busnesses must comply with the notifiable data breahces scheme. And because we know that Australians don’t even bother reading terms and conditions along with privacy policies. Perhaps make an effort to make these policies act delivered in a different and more innovative way can help consumers understand better.
consumers providing data enhances personalisation and help a company collect data for better use and imporvement. Since consumers are so important, it should be acknolwedged that these data should not solely be of a firms selfish and own interests. Find ways to use data to personalise and create an easier consumer journey for them. Build a sense of trust an relationship and an extra effort to comply with standards or even go beyond it to avoid another Facebook and Cambridge incident!!

It’s probably not the best approach but I don’t really take any steps to keep my data private. I think in society now days how I view and value my privacy is very different to 10, 20 years ago!

Great post! I like to think I’ve taken some steps to protect my privacy, such as having a private Instagram account and most of the privacy features on on Facebook, but even given that I doubt I’m as protected as I think!

those steps are definately a good start, but it’s true you can never know if you’re really protected or not even with all those settings!

Although I’d like to think a lot of my online information is private, the fact is I almost never read the terms / conditions of a new app/website! This laziness means that I only sign up to highly regarded website/apps, although you can never be too sure! Thanks for the great post 🙂

i agree! personal data is very important, not just to us but to businesses as well. i feel that the fastest way businesses can lose loyal customers is to have their data exposed and losing the trust of their customers. We trust businesses when we provide our personal data but if business do not take steps to protect these data, in my case, i would stop all usage of that business and find an alternative.
